FAQs

Catalog:

  1. Do you have gems that are not online?

The vast majority of our inventory of finished gemstones is listed online, but we are working constantly to cut more so it is worth asking us if what you want might come up soon. Please visit our contact page here for information on how to reach us. Click here for contact details.

  2. What can I do if I want a gemstone that is not listed or marked as sold?

We keep the vast majority of available gems listed on our website, but if there is one that you saw on our social media and can't find on our website, or have a gemstone you would like but haven't seen yet, feel free to contact us.

We're continually working on new gems, and the one you're searching for might be in our cutting pipeline, soon to be available.

  3. How can I stay updated on new gem listings?

Sign up for our email updates here and be among the first to know when we put new gems online. This ensures you get the gem you desire before someone else does.

    You can sign up here.

  4. How can I browse the catalog without viewing sold gems?

We've introduced a feature that lets you search our catalog while hiding the sold gems. Watch this brief video for instructions.

  5. How can I find a stunning gem for an engagement ring?

Ideal gemstones for engagement rings are high-quality sapphires or rubies due to their hardness and durability. While other gems are an option, they tend to be softer and less durable, making sapphires or rubies a better investment when it comes to engagement rings.

We understand that finding the perfect gem for an engagement ring can be overwhelming, and we're here to assist. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach us.

  6. Is the color in your gemstone pictures accurate?

We make strive to have the colors in the pictures we take accurately represent the color of the gemstone. However, each screen portrays colors at least slightly differently and gems often look different in different kinds of lighting.

Most of our gems are photographed in two different kinds of lighting to give you a broader overview of what it looks like in different light sources. Once you narrow down your choices though it is always important to view the gem or gems you like most in person under as wide a variety of different lighting conditions as possible. This is why we offer our 14-day return policy so you can even order in multiple gems to compare and return whatever you don't love for a refund. Details on our return policy.

  7. Does the gem I am looking at have inclusions?

When we photograph the gems we take care not to remove any of the inclusions from the photo. The gemstone in the photo is FAR larger than it will look in person so you can see all the details and this also allows you in virtually all cases to see any inclusions that it might have far larger than they would be in real life. So almost always the gem will look much cleaner and freer of inclusions in real life than it does in the photo.

  8. Where can I find gemstones matched pairs?

We cut each gemstone according to the rough, this artistic effort results in each gemstone being unique and as a result making it very rare to have two gemstones that match very closely. The best way to have matched pairs of our gems is if you are willing to have mismatched pairs (slightly different sizes or slightly different shapes, but with a similar feel).

Since our JD Select Outsourced gems are smaller and sometimes cut in calibrated sizes they too can be a way to find smaller matched pairs on our website. Click here to see the JD Select Outsourced gemstones.

  9. What is JD Select Outsourced?

JD Select™ Outsourced gems are a category of gems with better than standard commercial cutting and polish. They are not ones that we have cut ourselves but instead have carefully selected other cutters or cutting shops with higher quality work than is normal in the market to cut select gems according to John's specifications. This is done with rough which we often could not afford to cut ourselves.

The resulting finished gems are priced at a lower price per carat than our own cuts and are often smaller too so they are a great opportunity to own a relatively well-cut gem for a more affordable price.

  10. Can you create jewelry from your gemstones

We specialize exclusively in gemstones, as it's our area of expertise. However, we can assist you in finding a skilled jeweler who can design jewelry that complements the style and beauty of your chosen gemstone.

  11. I admire your gemstones, but I'm unsure how to find a jeweler

If you show us the gemstone and share photos of your envisioned jewelry style, we can help you locate a jeweler or designer who can bring your unique ring or pendant to life.

Our Gemstones

  1. How are these gems cut?

Our gem cutting is a precision process using modern machinery, but it is not computerized or automated in any way.

John does most of the preforming when many vital design decisions are made. When cutting the gems, John has a team of professionals, whom he hired and trained through the years, that help him achieve better production levels while maintaining a higher degree of gem-cutting quality. Each person (John included) executes the part they are best equipped to do, John does oversee every step of the cutting process, and though John does not cut every part of each gemstone himself, he does participate in the process and all the cuts are done using his designs.

You can see a video of the process here.

  2. How can I tell if a gem is well cut?

We provide some videos that help you to distinguish a well cut gem from a poorly cut one, you can watch those here.

  3. Are your gems treated or enhanced?

Many of our gems are entirely natural without any treatment at all, but some types of gems must be enhanced to attain a certain color or aspect to unleash their full beauty. We feel that the most important thing is that you the client know everything that may have been done to a gem and what that means so you can make your own informed decision about what is acceptable to you or not.

To that end, we disclose all treatments and enhancements and provide an in-depth explanation of what each enhancement is and what that means to you the client on this page.

  4. Are your gems Fair Trade or Ethically sourced?

These terms are used by many companies to mean a wide variety of things. Rather than just claiming the latest buzzword we strive to deal ethically with our suppliers and provide a more in-depth explanation of the issues to be considered to our clients. We also strive to treat all of our employees well with competitive salaries, a 7-hour work day (plus a one-hour lunch break), no work on weekends, one month's paid vacations, and other benefits.

As far as sourcing is concerned since each gem comes from widely differing geographic locations these considerations will also vary depending on the gem in question. Please contact us with any specific questions you might have about a gem or gems you are considering.Contact us

  5. Do you sell only genuine gems?

We do not sell any synthetic or simulated gems, all the gems we offer grew naturally in the earth and were mined from exotic locations where the specific geologic conditions for gemstone formation coincided to bring forth the natural beautiful gems that we then cut and polish and present to you.

  6. How do I know this gemstone comes from John Dyer Gems?

When a gemstone is not cut by us at John Dyer Gems there will be a clear note stating that it is not cut by us of John Dyer Gems, this note will be in the description of the gem detail page. These gemstones are mostly specified as JD Select Outsourced.

  7. Do your gems come with certificates?

We can upon request provide a PDF certificate of authenticity with a color photograph of the gem, stating what the gem type is, its size, weight, types of enhancements (if any), its origin and the name of the cut on it. We stand behind our representation of what the gem is.

We rarely get requests for independent gemstones lab reports because of the trust we have earned over the years and because of the increased cost and delay (usually a month or more) this adds to the gem. If you really want an independent lab report that can be arranged by paying for the costs of doing the lab report separately and then we will mail it into the lab and send the information to you once it is returned to us.

If once the gem is purchased you want to return the gem during our 14-day return period, we will still refund the cost of the gem, just not for the lab report, because that would increase the cost of the gem for the next client who wants the gem but didn't request the lab report. (If you ever get a recognized gem lab report (from GIA, AGL, Gubelin, or Lotus Gemology) that shows the gem is something different than what we had said it was we will refund the purchase price of the gem AND pay for the cost of the lab report up to a value of US$200. This guarantee is valid even after our regular return period is over and we have never had a situation where this was a problem.)

  8. How do I know that the gemstone is authentic?

We only sell natural gemstones mined from the earth, no synthetics or simulants. John goes through a rigorous process when purchasing the rough, making sure that the gems he cuts and sells are exactly what he states. He has a lot of experience and contacts from being in the gemstone market for years and has a very high reputation for the quality of gemstones he sells, making him a very trustworthy gemstone dealer.

For each gemstone purchased, upon request, we can provide a certificate of authenticity informing what the gem type is, its size, weight, types of enhancements (if any) that the gem has gone through, its origin, and the cut style done on it. We stand behind our representation of what the gem is.

We rarely get requests for gemstone lab reports because of the trust we have earned over the years. On the very expensive gemstones, we do sometimes provide them, but for the majority of gems, we do not provide the lab report because by doing so the price of the gem will rise significantly due to the cost of the report and there is also a month or so for the results to come in.

During that time we don't have the gem available for our clients. If you or your client wants an independent lab report that can be arranged by paying for the lab report separately and then we will mail it into the lab and send the information to you once it is returned to us.

If once the gem is purchased the client changes his/her mind and returns the gem during our 14-day return period, we will still refund the money on the gem, just not for the lab report, because that would increase the cost of the gem for the next client who wants the gem but might not want the report. (It has never happened yet, but if you ever get a recognized gem lab report (from GIA, AGL, SSEF, Gubelin, or Lotus Gem labs) that shows the gem is something different than what we had said it was we will refund the purchase price of the gem AND pay for the cost of the lab report up to a value of US$200. This guarantee is valid even after our regular return period is over.)

  9. Do you take orders for a specific size or cut of gemstone?

We get this question so often that we wrote an entire page on the subject! Please visit the “Do We Cut To Order” page here for more info.

  10. Do you cut other people's rough or recut a client's gems?

Our main focus is cutting as many beautiful gems as possible to give our clients a wide selection of finished gems. That means that we do not take in outside cutting work or recut client's gems. If needed we can sometimes refer you to another cutter though so feel free to contact us and tell us what you have and what kind of cutting you are looking for.

  11. Why is there a logo on the gemstone?

The main reason for the gemstone to have a logo is to show that it is our cutting and they came from John Dyer Gems. Many jewelers design the ring to show this logo.

  12. What does the JD logo on the gemstones mean?

Many of our gems carry our logo discreetly placed below the girdle of the gem. We use this logo to show that it is our cutting and that the gemstone came from John Dyer Gems.

We do also have gemstones that do not have our logo due to the size of the gem itself making it difficult to put a logo on it (the JD logo has a minimum size). Also at times based on the cut design, there are times we feel that the logo might distract from the beauty of the gem, so in those cases, we don't put on a JD logo. The other thing that happens is that some large and special gems might be things we consider entering a cutting competition and since these cutting competitions are judged blind, we cannot put a logo on our entry and run the risk of the judges disqualifying it because it would not be anonymous anymore.

If you want to purchase one of our gems that doesn't have a logo we can provide you with a PDF Certificate of Authenticity complete with a photo of the gem and other details which will prove that it is our cutting and our gem.

  13. What is a Baby Dyer?

Baby Dyer is a cute term that was originally created by a jeweler client of ours who had previously bought only very large and expensive gems of ours. He then told us that he needed some "Baby Dyers" to complete the collection.

In our catalog, it simply means that the gem costs $1,000 or less retail, that also usually means it isn't one of the biggest gems we sell, but it is simply a price category. And if you like you can browse ALL the Baby Dyers under the category section of our catalog.

  14. Why doesn't this gemstone have a logo?

Some gemstones do not have our logo due to the size of the gem itself making it difficult to put a logo on it (the JD logo has a minimum size).

Also at times based on the cut design, there are times we feel that the logo might distract from the beauty of the gem, so in those cases, we don't put on a JD logo.

The third reason is that a gem was entered into a gemstone cutting competition and the gem cannot have anything identifying who the cutter was, making it totally anonymous.

If you want to purchase one of our gems that doesn't have a logo we can provide you with a PDF Certificate of Authenticity complete with a photo of the gem and other details which will prove that it is our cutting and our gem.

Shipping and return policies

  1. What are the shipping options?

In the US we use the Post Office, FedEx, and UPS, all depending on what kind of service will best suit our client. For international orders, we usually use FedEx (except for France or French possessions where we use the post office). For other countries sometimes upon request, we can use the postal service also, but have found FedEx to be the most reliable and fastest in most cases.

  2. When will my order ship?

We usually ship an order within 2 business days, there are some cases where we reserve the right to hold the shipment longer to verify the credit card details and to make sure that the order was placed by a legitimate client using their own credit card. While we do not do this on the vast majority of orders it is necessary on some and is intended to protect clients and others from identity theft. (This kind of hold is more common for international orders)

  3. What is your return and refund policy?

We want you to be happy with your gems so we have a return policy that allows you to see the gems in person, examine them in a variety of lighting conditions and send back any that you don't love for a refund. For the exact terms of this policy visit our refunds page HERE.

  4. Do you ship to other countries internationally?

Yes! We ship all the time to many other countries. FedEx gets the package there quickly and easily and all shipments are covered by our in-house insurance until signed for at the destination.

  5. Are the gems insured while shipping?

We insure all gem shipments until signed for at the place of destination. You do not run any risk of losing the gem in the mail when ordering from us.

  6. Do I have to sign for the gem when it arrives?

All of our shipments require a signature on delivery for security and insurance reasons. If it is not convenient for you to wait at home for the gem to arrive and sign for it then we can often arrange a Hold for Pickup at a local Post Office or FedEx office which allows you to go in, show ID and sign for it at your convenience.

Feel free to request a hold of pick up on the order form when checking out!

Payment

  1. What are the payment options?

We work with every major credit card and PayPal. If you prefer we can also arrange to accept payment via wire transfer or check. All checks will need to clear for a while before gems are shipped though.

  2. Do we have any payment plans, and if so, what are they?

We have layaway and other types of payment plans that can be arranged on an individual basis. A general guideline is that we like the gem to be paid for in less than six months so things don't stretch out too long, but within that structure we are quite flexible in trying to find something that will work for you and allow you to own one of our gems.

Contact us and let us help you acquire that perfect gemstone you want!

  3. I loved this gem, but I can't purchase it right now. Is there a way you can help?

See our other FAQ about payment plans and you can also contact us and let us help you acquire that perfect gemstone you want!

  4. Do you charge sales tax?

We currently only charge sales tax for retail purchases in Minnesota and Arizona.

  5. Are there other taxes I will need to pay to purchase a gem?

In the US there are no other taxes you will need to pay. If you live in another country that will depend on whether your country charges an import duty on loose gemstones from the USA.

Most countries in Europe charge VAT which varies from about 15-20%, there can also sometimes be a small clearance fee charged by FedEx for their customs clearing services. These customs duties and clearance fees are the responsibility of the client.

Wholesale

  1. Do you sell gems wholesale?

We try to keep our prices very reasonable for the quality we offer at all levels of the market, but we do sell at trade prices to jewelers and jewelry designers. If you are a jeweler, you can request access to our wholesale-only section by submitting an application.

  2. I lost my login to the wholesale section, what should I do?

We made a short video explaining how to recover your login info if you have lost it. Click on the link for the video.
